In the early 1900s, Kansas boasted one of the strongest public health systems in the country, thanks to the colorful and charming public health leader Dr. Samuel Crumbine. His legendary work included the elimination of the common drinking cup and teaching Kansans that flies and rats carried disease. Today, these ideas seem very commonsense. In 1900, they were groundbreaking.

A Protective Hand
In the years since Crumbine, Kansas – like much of the country – has seen a shift from prevention to treatment. As early public-health threats were addressed, health care became the emphasis. The focus became reactive rather than proactive. Public funding decreased and the system, originally designed to protect the public from disease and danger, weakened. We’re working to change this. A strong public-health system helps us all – guarding us against disease, disability and premature death. It also extends a protective hand to shield us from catastrophe and bioterrorism.

Mission
To improve the health of all Kansans by strengthening and connecting the critical components of the public health system, educating Kansans about public health, and addressing public health issues in the state.
