Golden Belt Community Foundation   to conduct a nutrition and physical activity survey in Barton, Pawnee, Rush and Stafford counties. The survey hopes to identify needs in these counties that could then be addressed, resulting in healthier communities. This grant is intended to pay for supplies, printing and other survey-related expenses.   $17,560.00
22nd Judicial District Juvenile Services   is designed to provide training for up to 325 Brown County residents on how to identify and help children affected by adult drug abuse. This grant is intended to fund a town hall meeting in addition to five agency trainings for law enforcement officials, social workers and school staff. The goal is to reduce the number of children who are at risk for abuse or neglect and face many other dangers because of exposure to drugs.   $3,595.00
American Red Cross-Wyandotte County Chapter   for “A Prepared Downtown” project is designed to train at least 450 people living and working in Kansas City’s downtown area in CPR and basic community health education. In cooperation with the YWCA and Civic Leadership Training Council, this series of training sessions also intends to encourage revitalization of the small businesses and neighborhoods in this urban area of Kansas City.   $25,000.00
Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception   for the “Wilderness Warriors” program is designed to expose inner-city, Hispanic teenagers in Sedgwick County to outdoor recreation and exploration. This program intends to give them opportunities to experience activities including canoeing, fishing and hiking.   $10,350.00
Edwards County Hospital and Healthcare Center   for the“Chronic Disease Risk Reduction” project will help fund staff and supplies for health screenings for more than 600 people at health fairs, workplace wellness events and schools. This project hopes to decrease the risk factors that contribute to chronic disease such as obesity, tobacco use, poor diet, lack of exercise and failure to receive preventive health care.   $17,079.00
Boys and Girls Club of Topeka   is designed to provide funding for 106 underprivileged children to attend the after-school program during the 2009-2010 school year. This program hopes to assist these young people in finding positive opportunities that they might not otherwise have.   $10,070.00
Bristol Hill United Methodist Church   is designed to improve the oral health habits of children who attend the church’s Mother’s Day Out and pre-school programs. This project will also educate the families of these children about possible future health concerns. This funding is intended to help pay for staffing and supplies including toothbrushes and toothpaste.    $4,204.00
Capper Foundation for Crippled Children   will help address the shortage of high-quality child-care options available to families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders living in rural areas of Kansas. This project is designed to provide training seminars for about 300 child-care providers in Crawford, Shawnee, Sedgwick, Finney, Saline, and Ellis counties. By expanding the skill of child care providers, this grant hopes to increase the availability and quality of child care for Kansas children with autism.   $18,885.00
CASA-Children Worth Saving Inc.    will help recruit, train, and supervise additional volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates in Clark, Comanche, Ford, Gray, Kiowa, and Meade counties. CASA volunteers serve as the voices for abused and neglected children in court, and they are adult role models who develop positive relationships with these children. The project is designed to help about 60 children and their families.   $17,925.00
Children and Families Coalition Inc.   for the ”Happy Bear” program is designed to help teach about 500 young Dickinson County children how to speak up to prevent sexual abuse or to report abusive situations. This funding will take a play featuring Happy Bear to elementary classrooms. The Happy Bear character helps teach children how to say no, walk away and tell a trusted adult if anyone tries to touch them in an unwelcome way.    $3,369.00
El Centro Inc.    is designed to train lay health workers to provide information about the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke to Latinos in Wyandotte County. This grant intends to help pay for a smoking cessation program that will include information about the Kansas Tobacco Quitline and provide referrals for free or low-cost medications that can help people stop using tobacco. This funding is needed because according to a 2008 survey, the number of Latino smokers in urban Wyandotte County is higher than state averages.   $21,600.00
Elk County Community and Education Foundation   will support a wellness center for residents of Elk and Greenwood counties by funding the purchase of exercise equipment. The center also plans to provide information about healthy eating and a variety of fitness classes for all ages.   $19,900.00
Extension Education Foundation Inc.   will serve Sedgwick County families through “g2g (got to go) Outside,” an outdoor play initiative featuring events that encourage increased physical activity, family time and connection to nature. The program seeks to educate parents during their children’s formative years, increasing the potential for long-term healthy behaviors.   $22,500.00
Family Resource Center Inc. in Crawford County   will fund the relocation of the Family Resource Center’s existing playground equipment to the center’s new location. The funding will prepare the new site’s playground area for the equipment’s installation and cover the costs of moving the equipment.   $25,222.00
Flint Hills Therapeutic Riding Center Inc.   will provide training and certification for one new staff member. The center serves Sedgwick, Harvey and Butler county residents of all ages who have physical, cognitive or emotional disabilities.    $2,525.00
Asbury Park Inc.   will help fund a home health care project designed to assist elderly or disabled Harvey County residents. The project plans to offer participants the services necessary to allow them to stay in their homes longer, delaying the need to move to a long-term care facility.   $24,557.00
Friends of the Great Plains Nature Center Inc.   for the “Linking Children to Nature” program will help provide high- quality nature education for children in Sedgwick and Butler counties. The Great Plains Nature Center is one of the few public facilities in Sedgwick County that offers free school field trips, programs and special events for area youth.    $25,000.00
Harper Hospital District #5   will help fund a health fair for residents of Harper, Kingman, Barber and Sumner counties. The health fair will offer screenings for cholesterol, thyroid and glucose levels, free to participants ages 60 and older and at a reduced rate for other attendees. The event also expects to include free screenings for blood pressure levels, hearing, vision, skin cancer and body alignment/balance checks.    $7,154.00
Hope Street Youth Development Inc.   for the “Reality Project” is designed to help promote healthy behaviors to at least 250 Wichita teenagers through the use of technology, online videos, social networking, and blogging. The teens plan to blog about the knowledge they have gained through researching the effects of unhealthy and healthy lifestyle choices. It’s also expected that participants will post public service announcements on the Reality Project's Web site in addition to Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.    $25,000.00
Jackson Heights Educational Foundation   for the “Hilltop Trail” project will help fund materials needed to upgrade a 3-mile trail on school grounds to an all-weather hiking trail in northern Jackson County that will give residents of Jackson and Nemaha counties a free exercise resource. The trail will include multiple fitness stations to assist students and others as they work toward building healthier lifestyles. The trail is also expected to provide learning opportunities outside of the classroom for area students.   $6,000.00
Kansas African American Museum Inc.   for the museum and nine other organizations will help continue the “Senior Wednesday” program, which provides senior citizens in Sedgwick, Harvey, Reno and Butler counties with a weekly educational and social activity. This grant intends to help fund supplies, speaker fees and other resources for these weekly programs at museums and other area attractions.    $24,916.00
Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters Inc.   for the “M.A.G.I.C.” (Making a Genuine Impact in Children) project is designed to help expand the program’s one-on-one mentoring services for about 925 children across the state who live in single-parent homes. This grant is primarily intended to fund background checks for these new mentors. Mentors can help prevent unhealthy behaviors, including substance abuse and delinquency, among these children by modeling healthy behaviors and encouraging good decision-making.   $24,512.00
Kansas Children’s Service League   for the “Shaken Baby Syndrome Campaign” will help serve parents of newborns in Sedgwick County. This abuse prevention program includes printed information, an educational DVD and steps for parents to follow so they can develop resilience to the frustration they may face because of a crying infant. The program also intends to help parents educate their babies’ caregivers about the serious effects of shaking a young child.   $23,095.00
Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence in Topeka   for the “Silent Witness Display” and “Beyond Statistics” projects will help encourage Kansans to end domestic and sexual violence. These projects will share stories of Kansas women who died violently at the hands of an intimate partner or acquaintance. This funding will also help promote the Kansas Crisis Hotline and the Help Change Kansas Web site, which offer any Kansan the information they need to help a friend, neighbor or relative deal with domestic violence or sexual assault.   $19,170.00
Kansas Family Partnership Inc. in Topeka   for the “Positive Change” project will help increase the number of drug-free messages seen by Kansas youth. The project will ask Kansas teenagers to develop and post messages on Kansas Family Partnership's Facebook page wall that explain why they are drug-free. This funding is intended to pay for T-shirts and other supplies to promote the project.   $4,111.00
Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation in Manhattan   for the “Connecting Kansas Agriculture with Kansas Kids” project will help educate children about where wholesome food comes from, encouraging good nutritional choices and strengthening positive connections to Kansas agriculture. This funding is intended to pay for the printing and production of books, videos and other materials that will be available for use by public and elementary school libraries in every Kansas county.   $14,000.00
Kansas Food Bank Warehouse Inc. in Wichita   will help support the “Food4Kids” program, which serves chronically hungry children. This funding is intended to provide about 6,250 large zip-top bags of food that each contain two days’ worth of healthy calories in the form of single-serving, kid-friendly, shelf-stable foods.   $25,000.00
Kansas State Department of Education   for the “S.A.M.s (School Administration Managers) Training Project” is designed to help fund training for 50 school principals across the state on how to spend more time on instructional leadership in their buildings so that the level of student achievement will rise.   $25,000.00
Kansas State University   for the “Operation Medicine Cabinet” project will help educate state residents about how to dispose of unused medications in an environmentally sound way such as a community collection program. It’s hoped that this program will reduce the drain-disposal of medications that can contaminate water supplies. Funding for this project will include distributing posters in pharmacies and medical offices about proper disposal methods.   $23,581.00
Lawrence Public Library Foundation   will help boost the number of children, and adults participating in the library’s 2010 summer reading program. This funding is intended to pay for events including a kick-off party at the city pool, a block party at the end of the summer and incentives for completion of the reading program.   $23,800.00
Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority   supports “Passport Day Camp,” a summer project designed to model healthy habits as well as provide nutrition support and structured activity for more than 100 families with children living in low-income housing. In addition to a daytime children’s program, evening family nights will incorporate healthy habits into social events. This grant is intended to help fund staff and supplies for the project.   $7,090.00
Legacy, A Regional Community Foundation   supports the “S.A.S.S.” (Smart Approach to Sexual Safety) program to benefit girls who attend Arkansas City High School. The program was created by a therapist, and it teaches healthy relationship skills and decision-making in addition to practical strategies for personal safety. This funding is intended to pay for the development of textbooks, teacher’s guides and the development of an interactive Web site.   $24,680.00
McPherson County Community Foundation   is designed to support a summer lunch program for at least 94 children from low-income families. This program gives groceries to students who otherwise wouldn’t have enough food to eat during the summer break from school. This funding is intended to pay for nonperishable, kid-friendly foods.   $10,000.00
Mitchell County Communities That Care Inc.   for the Vision Teen Center will help provide leadership opportunities and Increase the availability of positive recreational activities for teens while promoting the involvement of parents in their lives. This funding would pay for a project coordinator to recruit and train volunteers as well as food and other supplies for events at the center.   $3,500.00
Nazareth Convent and Academy Corp.   for the “Neighbor to Neighbor” project in Cloud County will help mothers with young children as well as women from small communities solve problems, set individual goals and learn new skills. The project expects to serve at least 100 women and children each week. This funding will help pay for project staff and supplies.   $24,988.00
Newman University   supports a project designed to decrease bullying at Sedgwick County schools by training 5th-grade teachers to teach their students how to deal with the injustices in the children’s lives. The project will help address the negative effects of bullying such as missed time at school, poor social skills and aggression toward adults and peers. This grant is intended to fund workshops for parents and teachers as well as supplies for the project.   $25,000.00
Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors Inc.   is designed to help provide mentors for an additional 250 children across the state who will spend time outdoors with the children to share their interest in nature and pass along the outdoor heritage of Kansas. This grant is intended to help fund staffing, travel and equipment for this program.   $25,000.00
Phillips County Development and Community Foundation Inc.   for “Operation Care Package” will help send packages to more than 100 deployed military members from Kansas. This project intends to help raise the morale of Kansas troops.   $5,000.00
Pittsburg State University   for the “Educating for Public Health” project will help develop two courses in public health, which the university hopes to offer for general education credit, in addition to creating a minor in Public Health. This will be an opportunity for future community leaders and decision-makers in many fields to gain a broader knowledge of public health. The Health Foundation grant is intended to help pay for staffing as well as travel to conferences related to public health topics.   $24,613.00
Real Men, Real Heroes Inc.   will help support the “Teen Mentoring Project,” which selects older high school boys (Teen Heroes) to serve as mentors for up to 45 African-American middle school boys in Bel Aire. The Health Foundation grant intends to pay for field trips, food, T-shirts as well as incentives to encourage the boys to succeed in academics.   $7,500.00
Central Plains Area Agency on Aging   will help increase physical activity for senior citizens in Sedgwick and Harvey counties by offering line-dancing classes at three senior centers. This grant will fund staffing, travel and supplies for the project, and it is needed because national data indicates that at least 25 percent of senior citizens are inactive.   $10,425.00
Seward County United Fund   supports a training program to give Hispanic parents the tools they need to keep their children in school and making healthy decisions. More than two-thirds of Seward County’s population is Hispanic, and many of these parents speak Spanish as their first language, so the training and materials will also be available in Spanish. This funding is intended to pay for three days of training for up to 50 parents.   $25,000.00
Shadow Buddies Foundation in Lenexa   for the “Rescue Buddy” program, which will supply a “buddy” stuffed toy to children in 15 Kansas counties who come in contact with EMS personnel through illness or injury. These buddies are hands-on educational tools used to help calm children in very stressful situations. This funding is intended to pay for stuffed toys, accessories and shipping costs.   $15,210.00
Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas   for the “Home Services” project will help provide supportive, cost-effective services including household repairs to homebound older adults living in Wyandotte County as an alternative to nursing home placement. This funding is intended to double the staff time that is dedicated to recruiting volunteers as well as people who need these services.   $24,534.00
SIDS Network of Kansas Inc.   for the “Kansas Cribs for Kids” project is designed to reduce infant deaths by providing an appropriate sleep environment through education and safe cribs at no charge. The program will provide portable cribs to families that are unable to afford them. This funding is meant to pay for 350 cribs and shipping costs.   $22,750.00
Spirit of the Plains, CASA, Inc.   will help recruit and train additional volunteers who can serve as voices in court for abused and neglected children in Finney, Scott, Wichita, Greeley, Hamilton, and Kearny counties. This funding helps support this group’s full-time volunteer coordinator's salary for one year.   $15,492.00
Sunflower CASA Project Inc.   will help recruit and train additional volunteers who can serve as voices in court for abused and neglected children in Riley, Clay and Pottawatomie counties. This funding intends to double the hours of the agency’s volunteer supervisor for 2010.   $13,130.00
Three Trees Inc.   will help raise Sedgwick County’s awareness of childhood bereavement issues and the related services provided by this organization. This grant is intended to pay for a promotional video, printing costs and Web site development. This funding is needed because research indicates that if a child receives support in the first nine months after losing a loved one, it can help prevent depression and other health problems later in life.   $25,000.00
USD 379 Clay Center Community Middle School   for the “Positive Addictions” program will provide opportunities to educate and support students in developing positive, healthy habits that they can practice throughout life. This funding is intended to help pay for student lunches with adult mentors as well as supplies needed for program events.   $8,880.00
USD 460 Hesston   for the “Real Care Babies” project will provide simulation infants for Hesston High School students so they can have hands-on experience with parenting in a safe setting while gaining awareness about the realities of teen pregnancy. This funding intends to purchase four Real Care babies.   $3,229.00
USD 491 Eudora   for the “WOW (Wild Over Wellness) Festival” will help increase awareness of and access to community resources and strategies that can improve the health of children and their families. This funding intends to pay for prizes, T-shirts and a healthy breakfast for event participants.   $1,500.00
Van Go Mobile Arts Inc.   for a youth mentoring project in Douglas County will help boost the effectiveness of Van Go's community mentor program by increasing the number of volunteers working with teens who are at risk for drug use or violent behavior. This funding intends to pay for the staff time that is devoted this year to coordinating volunteers.   $18,500.00
Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center Inc.   for the “Outreach to Underserved Communities” project will enhance culturally sensitive outreach and services to African-Americans and Hispanics in Sedgwick County. The purpose of this project is to increase awareness of sexual violence as well as to promote healthy behaviors and knowledge of the services available to victims in the targeted communities. This funding intends to pay for a broad range of advertising.   $25,000.00
Wichita Festivals Inc.   will provide Riverfest attendees with individual antiseptic wipes to clean their hands. The goal of this project is to help prevent the spread of communicable diseases, especially the H1N1 flu virus, at Riverfest 2010. This funding intends to pay for 50,000 antiseptic wipes and signage identifying the locations where the wipes can be found.   $7,000.00
Wichita Independent Neighborhoods Inc.   will help provide neighborhood associations with training, resources, and information that can improve the safety and health of Sedgwick County. This project hopes to teach neighborhood associations how to identify problems in their areas and develop solutions for them. This funding intends to pay for a part-time staffer for this project as well as supplies and other resources for a community garden.   $24,740.00
YMCA of Wichita   will help add a full-time Healthy Community Director to the YMCA staff who would focus on expanding the work and membership of the Health & Wellness Coalition through committees and community events.   $25,000.00
