Our Philanthropic Role
The Kansas Health Foundation serves as a philanthropy, not a charity. While each strives to help people and make a difference in communities, philanthropies and charities take very different approaches and play unique roles in society. Charitable organizations exist primarily to address short-term, pressing needs. Philanthropies are positioned to take a more proactive, long-range view of problems and their solutions.
Here Today and Tomorrow
We didn’t come into being to address a challenge today, then go away tomorrow. We carefully balance our grantmaking and our investment strategies to ensure that we exist in perpetuity. That allows us to focus on long-term results. We function as a facilitator, an information source and an advocate for change.
We believe philanthropy is an independent voice and an essential component of American democracy, and we seek ways to perpetuate democracy in the state and in the nation. As with all philanthropies, we exist to make the world a better place. That leads us to develop strategies and tactics to help make Kansas the best state in the nation to raise a child. It’s a job we love.
